Cave Story and 1001 Spikes are coming to Switch

Acclaimed retro platformers Cave Story and 1001 Spikes will be coming coming to Nintendo Switch.

Publisher Nicalis tweeted a picture of the games’ cover images on a Switch dashboard, noting that its recently revealed The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ wouldn’t be alone on the console.

“Isaac was lonely so we brought a few friends to keep him company,” the publisher teased in the now deleted tweet.

Yes, the tweet has been deleted, but ostensibly that has less to do with the announcement of Cave Story and 1001 Spikes than it does for its allegedly accidental look at the platform’s dashboard UI, which appears to be customisable.

When previously teased in a Treehouse livestream, the UI had a white background rather than the black one here.

More interesting is the option to “Change User,” which wasn’t shown before and isn’t available on Wii U, where players must close their software first before doing this. Granted you may have to do this on Switch as well once you opt to change profiles.

But still, Cave Story and 1001 Spikes! Many Nintendo fans will be familiar with Cave Story by now, as the heartfelt 2004 Metroidvania by Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya has appeared on Wii and 3DS as a remake and then remake of a remake.

1001 Spikes is a notoriously difficult platformer in which players are given 1000 lives to conquer a series of comically conniving catacombs. It launched in 2014 on Wii U, 3DS, Xbox One, Vita, PC, Mac and Linux before getting a PS4 port the following year.

What’s not clear is when these games will arrive. Could they be launch titles like The Binding of Isaac?

These aren’t the only games Nicalis is bringing to the Switch, as it previously announced that its F-Zero-esque racer Redout would likewise appear on Nintendo’s upcoming console/handheld hybrid this spring.
